In the “good old days”, such as they were, many trains had luggage compartments in the carriage, or an entire carriage for luggage, a caboose if you will. Different solutions are required today for the commuting cyclist of today, perhaps one or two carriages equipped with extra racks would do the job.
Interesting stuff on the radio today:
Exposed brick, smashed avocado, hanging edison bulbs, the patina of industry and reclaimed wood furniture β this is what writer and critic, Kyle Chayka calls Filterworld. It’s greige, ambient, seamless, meaningless; its sameness disguised as difference, homogeneity recast as authenticity, placelessness as specificity. Its manifestations in architecture, design, food β the aesthetic landscapes in which we live – is a kind of perverse application of Brian Enoβs description of ambience as being as ignorable as it is interesting. Kyle discusses the political and psychological implications of this ubiquitous global ambience and what it means to live in a machine-curated world.
He goes on to describe the time when visitors to an Instagram Wall decorated with an angel wings mural are required to stretch their arms out in front of it, and then request a friend or passerby to take a photo of them in the pose. Then post it to Instagram, with the appropriate hashtag, and search the hashtag for an almost infinite number of other folks in the same place doing exactly the same thing. The idea is that the The Tyranny of the Algorithm constructs places in RL and on the internet (of social media) to all be a mod on this prototype. My classic mind translates this as a homogenous gloop of plurality as found in Warhol’s soup cans. π
So yep, FilterWorld is where we are at right now, which got me thinking, has there ever existed a canonical list of names ending with “land” or “world”? As it turned out, commencing a quest of instant info hit will do it, asked my first question at Reddit, let it bring forth much filtered yet unfettered truth, so help me Algorithm!π Jeepers, the “needle jumps” 50 secs in. Someone over there mentioned Lord of the Flies/Children of the Corn/Planet of the Apes, thus the moral of the story is: Fat wins the day? π
Yes, and newsflash read all about it, all those great slasher films will never make it over on any of the umpteen fta channels over here. π
Don’t recommend watching The One while preparing/consuming dinners in the event of missing out on a short but critical dialogue that precedes ten minutes of non-stop wham bam action. Consequently, the process of catching up on the plot description in the Wikipedia page turns more or less tedious and fruitless. πWeird, Bergeron was a Frenchman, from a French family, yet the motto on the fca is in English. His father doesn’t have it, but Nicolas much earlier does. She uploaded the image to the site with nary a historical reference, thus it has merrily propagated to other commercial heraldry sites like this that present with the usual beguiling authentic look.
Yeah the crosses on the Sterne fca are patonce, and not straight, as opposed to the US versions.
The basic layout of the motif gets a lot of modding variation, so quite ubiquitous, though in Elvin’s dictionary only two versions are mentioned:Plate 2 Item 2:
45 Az. a Chevron lozengy engrailed or and gu. betw. three Plates each charged with a Martlet sa. Flet- woodPlate 22 item 9:
Az. on a chev. ar. betw. three Staff- Tree leaves slipped or, as many Bees volant ppr. LeafThere’s quite a bit of info over at generalarmoryfandom, however their searches only pull family names beginning with “A”.
Edit: Family tree, all boxed up in a puny 1606 files! πCan be! A Google image search will reveal much, he might have based his mods on a real fca, you just have to find it. π
Posted a question over at Genealogy going way way back – you know, as Google searches evolve to encompass more content, so the resulting mysteries multiply. πInteresting – the info on Wikipedia suggests a minimum time interval before melt as 1000 years, is it possible sooner?
Just a couple of posts back:Toronto trains are trams on steroids
Over here, our commuter trains are trams on downers, and that’s on a good day!
And someone from Reddit said trackless trams are glorified buses. It matters little in the end what mode is best, other than bike compatibility in road sharing. And ease of use for cyclists travelling long distances- it takes a good dose of courage for a cyclist to take a bike on a commuter train that has standing room only!Purchased a single use licence for AceMovi (no Wikipedia article yet) some time back, not a bad program to use, found out later the licence is per machine, not user. To use the licence on a second machine, PM them for a new key, so that the old key on the old machine won’t work anymore.
They, like most other editors have common video techniques documented, including the Ken Burns effect, used prominently in the 1990 Civil War documentary.
Surprised it got the name and attribution so late in the century – still-panning goes back to at least my DOB. π
NMM will now become the NMA – No Mean App, if all goes well. πAs the new tablet has begun to acquire cobwebs, and the 8 year old tablet already starting to show a little wonkiness, went ahead and transferred the data with Smart Switch. Went fairly well, although the program can be a bit picky if things are not plugged in the required sequence. π
Fun fact, the micro Usb 2.0 to USB C cable purchased for the job is already dead tech. πSeems to be a gazillion more options in the setup and resulting interface, not a gimme for the time poor. The easy access google search bar on the old unit is not replicated in the new, so it’s a priority to reconfigure the one-click quick search icon.
There always has to be a hitch though, the SIM card won’t eject when the small wire removal tool is inserted in the old unit. There’s a spring in the hole that responds, but no ejecto. The guy in the local tech shop might have the gear to do it. πYep, such actors get a rep as leading lights in their own unique way – typically when they score much coveted roles on offer like Lamp Post #1. π
Yet, Shallow Grave gets a fairly positive rap from the viewers, so on the list – as does the (unrelated) 1994 movie. π
Have you seen A.I. Artificial_Intelligence? Much investment in time and resources for this classic idea from Kubrick to happen in a movie, Spielberg waves his directorial magic wand in smoothing out the major bumps and jumps, so very watchable. For me, something tries to spoil it – perhaps the beginning is slow and muted, some scenes a little too maudlin, the end dragging on a tad too long. Certain scenes are glue to the memory – such as Rouge City:
Edit: Oh, The Walk-In being a 5 part series never reached the magic six (based on fact, so relevant with info on proscribed Far Right movements) – hence now streaming crime drama Cardinal, four seasons, each of six parts, guaranteeing this one “busy” for the while. πYep, attempting to convince a 240 lb butcher wielding a meat cleaver his mince sucks is risky at best. π
There are some good bike trails in Florida, pity they do not co-exist with main roads very well. Problem the world over. π
In the Florida Keys Heritage Trail, there’s “obey all traffic laws.” Over here bikes on trails aren’t considered as “traffic” – or is it those trails cut across live traffic throughways?
Edit: Nature.com certainly does the rounds, here they reveal the news of the earliest known evidence of photosynthesis – amazing how these things preserve for so long. πIndeed, and as Gordon Gekko might have once said, “Green is good!” – the zero on the roulette wheel!
Talking of bones and teeth, here’s a nice sound
https://freesound.org/people/Bon_Vivant_Pictures/sounds/456366/Sounds like a robotosaurus would make the perfect villian in the next Transformers movie! π
Never judge a magazine by its cover, go to the back page and check out the cartoons first! π
Just posted a notification of warning about our national emblem minced, cracked teeth are no fun at all. π
Neither do they focus on Ley Lines, Te lapa, Fairy Circles, creepypasta, or generally things that go bump in the night!
Yeah, the 45 minute episode formula, even the original X-Files was no more than a bunch of lightly serialised well packed stories – ever come across anything that spanned more than one episode?
We did mention Starwars – so chanced upon this 13mb download of a beauty at Wayback. Star Roars, The Force and I, The Empire Strikes Out, Rehash of the jeti, may the farce be with you, and gooly o’ gosh this imagination never ever conceived of such a creation as the Millennium Enterprise.
Never knew the great teacher Obi-Wan Kenobi was actually Oldie Von Moldie, a 97 year old Commercial Airline Pilot who in his spare time, moonlights as a Telephone Operator after many years teaching this guy:I’m Lube Skystalker! I’m majoring in “Incredible Space Heroics” at Buffoon Tech! As my Term Project, I decided to organize an army, find a convenient space ship, rescue you, and fly you six billion miles to safety on the planet, Dreidel!
Fun fact, Obi was no Gradgrind either.

Ooh, missed that, or misread it. Or they have changed the wording- here’s plenty of mods for Palworld just loaded up today. A couple for yesterday though. π
Yep, because Nintendo never chose to make their content available cross-platform, it’s sour grapes when someone else “does it.” πIs it possible for the captive Mewtwo to escape? It seems that once he was used by Giovanni, so that guy is one to watch as well!
Nexus won’t host content for Palworld. The level of hubbub in controversy is scaling up, there’s the question of ripoff, do you think that’s fair? The Children Act is a classy piece bringing to sharp relief the folly of adhering to rules of religion, and, spoiler alert, it has a rather depressing outcome.
OTOH, the opposite effect tonight after the screening of Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, a cracking cast and script (highlights).
The extra spice was Rip Torn, well known for his on-set conflicts– no American Dream on that occasion but a no holds barred American Light’s Out for Mailer!Might be best to consider open source alternatives like Omnivore or Wallabag where there’s a facility to port data over. How big is your database? Some cross platform rtf files can have a tendency to bloat – is it possible to convert them to something else?
Not quite the same thing though – certain sites which provide personal favourite sections – (e.g watchlists on IA or Wikipedia, or bookmarks on programming sites – e.g. AHK or Stack Exchange) seek to foster such a reliance on their services for users. Something else that cheers each time reminded, the personal YouTube favourites list exceeds well over 1,000 already, and newsflash, Pichai/Zuck won’t be introducing categories any time soon. πChecked the IA for the time, no dice – even posted the links to them, the only response was from our ever present friend Mr. Nokandu.
At first spec FindMyPast has quite a few nice features albeit somewhat intrusive, did a search for a name on their site while logged on, and promptly in came an email entitled “We’ve discovered something just for you…”:Is this your ancestor?
We did some digging after your last record search β and we found something interesting. If it’s relevant, you could use the details to start a family tree.
Have we found a match?
…
<Details of person searched>The person details obviously relate to a later census, so clicking the embedded link naturally gets their subscription offer paywall page. π
Remember well the Ripping Yarns a hoot when they were first released:
Another dose of Portlandia for good measure:
The forums migration at CPanel still burns hot in some memories, the post formats were not carried through in every case, and a few posts that were made around the time of migration were lost forever!
Signing up with FindMyPast probably won’t help as much as desired, even with a subscription. Their free services include:1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census (transcripts are free)
All Irish censuses 1821-1911
Irish Roman Catholic Parish Registers
Britain, Campaign, Gallantry & Long Service Medals & Awards (transcripts are free)
All BillionGraves cemetery records
All Canadian censuses 1851-1911Meagre pickings for some, no doubt, in the Stearn case, the 1881 census did help a bit. In the meantime really hanging out for “free” 1891 and 1901 censuses, (which should be free anyway, thus curated by the government in its own website, as the census has, is, and always will (or should) be a state run initiative.)
Are they the monsters on this page? Round about 64 cards in total, do you have extras? To edit them, it’s probably just a question of using an image editor like paint.net, printing is a different question altogether- get a printshop that can do a light laminate job depending on what you want.
