How do the VR base station work- is it just audio/visual or something else?
Nothing like a cool change, after a very dry year, we are also receiving some much needed rain.
Funny thing happened with hibernate resume, pressing escape out of the W11 lockscreen (which wants to be turned off) the screen looked like a still version of the sea in this Fata Morgana animation:

Hard reset required, and, talking of wonderful Windows, got this in the feed, of course an OEM version here, funnily enough no difference in price to the retail version, so to all intents and purposes it’s identical to the retail. Any difference with yours?

Haven’t seen any of those, was the early one silent? Did any of those movies ever “do justice” to the book, as with Through the Looking Glass, a priceless masterpiece.

Did happen to see the original Piranha the other day, funny thing is, do now faintly recall seeing it many years ago. Nice one, with plenty of thrills, with respect to such the classification of Comedy Horror is somewhat misleading, Light Horror is a better fit. If you will, the subject and impact of the movie’s horror scenes are portrayed in a somewhat lighter vein.
The whys and wherefores of the satirical movie Bamboozled came out as somewhat … bamboozling, notably in ways the director and writers had not intended. Do like the ads though:

            Nice. What’s it for?

We’ve been having some icky weather lately. It’s been about 65 – 70ish with extremely high humidity lately so the humidity inside is around 75% and has been 100% outside. Not fun! The next project around here for the handyman is to replace the weatherstripping. That should help! Due to the temperature range, running the air conditioner won’t really do much other than drive up the electric bill needlessly so it’s a mite uncomfortable here.

Yes, over here the A/C is an option of last resort. Else, in sultry weather it’s windows wide open with a brisk fan blowing throughout. The fan here has a loud creak only fixable by slicing open the smooth and shiny shielding, an action entailing permanent excision from the present dΓ©cor. πŸ˜›

The support team for Smeg didn’t want the 100 mb video file created and edited with Clipchamp. So, the easiest thing to do was use Youtube filtering to get the thing down to just under 12mb, at the same resolution.

                  It’s shockingly bad!
Speedtest provide reasonable results for this connection, the upload speed is low according to typical DSLAM configuration. It took more than thirty minutes to upload that video to youtube, if only the upload speed was 1MBS or even half that – all done in under five minutes.

We’re all going to be wafted up to the cloud(s), where the future promises a safe haven for our souls, thoughts and aspirations. leaving all earthly concerns, and hardware behind. πŸ™‚
Meanwhile, after a kind lady asked me to re-install OneDrive, had absolutely tons of hours of fun with it, completely free of charge. That is, all charge of energy has been drained from this form, leaving a lifeless OneShell of OneNess in OneLimbo! πŸ™

Edit: The notifications dropdown on youtube used to have clipped text for the first words in the video description, they have now replaced it with “For you”. Even though it’s very nice of them to say that, it’s futile attempting to stave off the advancing notion that something has been (un)intentionally barfed. πŸ˜›

Nice, do declare the scourer/sponges here are well used, and at the same time not too hard on the nose. πŸ™‚

Watch those sponges! There was someone on the radio today with something to say about carnivorous sponges. Here’s a refresher:

In the actual Windows boot, do they up the performance of the power plan until the core system is loaded? Because of the size of the hosts file, it’s taking a long time for the internet to come online after boot, hence the question.

Did zoom help at all in the news clips, over here something like a 250% boost was required.

Funny thing with the Smeg Coffee maker (AUS version) today, the filtration now cuts out after around two cups in the 12 cup carafe, and will not resume when the machine is switched off and on again. The only time it will resume is when the unit is empties and refilled.
This also affects the descaling. A fascinating video of the process here where the filtration cuts out at about 1:35 to 1:40 in the video. Over to Smeg for this one. πŸ™‚

On the radio there was a very interesting show about ADHD, must confess some of my earlier days might have deviated somewhat from the neurotypical, taking byte sized chunks from OCD, DD and ADHD, well past all that now. The upshot from todays show was that you could never self diagnose with the three types ADHD, it has to be performed by a professional. The journalist from the show has quite a following in TikTok – here’s a short video on what she gets up to.

Shame came across as a little too disjointed, off-piste even, there was something missing in the character profile of the protagonist for it to work. But then again, as he is described by the other players as a bit of a weirdo, there’s the B-grade license immediately handed on a platter to the director. A fine film, if given a few extra edit passes. Exactly what content to snip and tweak were far beyond the capabilities of this unseasoned non-professional. πŸ˜›
Saw Poltergeist (from memory again for the third time), great to watch. What didn’t work was how or why the demonic “beast” which captured Carol Anne did not have anything to do with the restless bodies from the cemetery, at the end. Two seemingly unrelated supernatural phenomena, … or were they after all?
Of course, not only was the mirror flesh peeling face scene classic, it describes very well how I start up certain mornings. πŸ˜›

Oh, have some with power buttons in the PC graveyard underneath, there are old Logitech, Laser, and Sky keyboards all from the noughties I think. The foil Will definitely help, but will also look rather awful. Partially settled the issue by turning the aerial on the radio to face the other way. πŸ˜›
Fun fact: The radio is much closer to the microwave, which performs a much better job of killing the conversation. πŸ˜›

Btw, the APC software deposits this directory APCPowerChuteConfig in C:\ (Root) containing a file currentprocess.xml with a bit of data including proc id. Why, don’t ask. πŸ˜›

The buzzing from the sound chip is more related to a DPC latency thing, happens after playing something in a browser tab, and then switching out to another tab or application.
Because it happens only rarely, updating the driver may or may not necessarily be the fix. otherwise it’s turning off the AMD devices and disabling hardware acceleration.

Oh, those messages are emitted during the running of the hibernation wakeup script, which gives more credo to the arguments of the antihibernationists. πŸ™‚
As a matter of interest, it does take a rather long time for Windows to sort out network issues after the PC has been switched off for months, and strangely, the effects of any human involvement don’t amount to much. Edit: Apart from putting the issue out to hang. πŸ˜›

Edit: Hmmm, the Realtek audio driver in the Windows Catalog is is an older version (6.0.9238.1) to the above, but the zip file (DRV_Audio_RTK_SZ_DTSC_W11_64_V6092381_20211115R.zip) must have come from somewhere like the ASUS ROGues.
Funny, the Windows Catalog has a newer version which hasn’t been included in WU yet, and an even newer one at ROGue’s, which links on to the protected content at My Digital Life. πŸ˜›

Right now, using a “low-impact” customer power plan, as for the keystrokes, unfortunately the Prodigy has no power button! The PC chassis is endowed with one hence an unswerving reliance on that. πŸ˜›
The power plan includes a hybrid sleep which keeps the fans spinning, followed by full hibernation after 60 minutes. Thing is, if it’s not hibernated by command, the rig does actually power up intermittently during hibernation, and, after around 10-15 seconds, (realising it’s “supposed” to be off) turns itself off again! Consequently, this poor user has lent himself to falling into the marvelous rhythm of shutting the “****” thing down once a day, an arrangement the machine and human can come to terms with, at least on an “equal” basis. πŸ˜›
Will be planning to surf the UEFI sometime, a minor tweak at best (said Nervous Nellie to Cautious Conrad.)

Moving on to other issues bouncing in on the spectrum, the first was an ongoing going issue with FTA digital from the antennae, “solved” by power reset on the amplifier. A friend suggested boosting the antennae signal which entails more spaghetti and expense so probably just have to live with it.

A slightly more disturbing occurrence is the effect of the new rig on the AM/FM radio reception at the other end of the room. The task now being what component in the PC is the cause – another use case it turned out to be a fan described in this old thread. In which case, here it could be the Cryorig QF120 LED Silent Series 120mm PWM Fan installed as an extra. These days many are pointing their RFI fingers at PSUs, the one here is a Cooler Master MWE Gold FM 650W Power Supply with about the same throughput as the one in the old rig.
To help diagnosing the issue (apart from spectrum analysers and the like) is what type of sound the RFI produces on the radio. Here it’s just a static buzz, not at constant pitch, as it modulates to the voices and music in broadcast. A site which offers different types of RFI sounds of computers is this, if only there were more samples from other components like fans and PSUs. In any case, a great resource for Sounds and Music! πŸ™‚
                                Here’s a very good read-up on RFI

UPSing the ante yet again is the upstairs 1200 VA Eaton UPS: 5S1200AU, old (early 2017) so only the manual is hosted now, which does the job, sort of, except the USB unit control codes can no longer be read by the installed driver software, presumably because something got fried. Well, there are connect alerts (every ~3-4 mins) when a USB ommunication port is connected to the UPS. Hard to diagnose, as it started to do this while diagnosing software freeze-UPS back in ’21. One could re-install the driver at connect, and things would work, however the process had to be repeated every bootup. Regrettable, as Eaton Tech Support were very much on the side of accentuating the turn on/turn off/ install/uninstall approach, with little regard for other methods e.g. USB Analyzer.
And to cap it all off, attempted to register in order to become one of the family, rather miffed at the return email:

                                Thank you for contacting Eaton.

We regret to inform you that your request has been denied. Further inquiries should be directed to your Power Systems Administrator or your Eaton Contact.

                                Sincerely,

Yeah, sometimes there can be too much gross yuck, anything from Hammer (esp. Cushing, Lee, Reed) is worth a gander though. Why not try some from the Thriller series like The Colour of Blood or The Eyes Have It?
Don’t know how that was missed – Gillian Barber is great in these – on the list! πŸ™‚

On FTA there is a Nicolas Cage festival, and last night they played Joe, much better than Dog Eat Dog, which, apart from one or two good scenes, was off.
