The old Skyrim unit came back from the repairer still with the beeps on boot up. Changed leads, connections, no improvement, so returned it to the repairer where it booted up beautifully. We agreed there was something amiss with the power back at the ranch, the first suspect off the rank being the (not so) old batteries in the UPS.
On the Ob machine, there’s still this weird copout from the UPS driver after an update some years ago. Had been in contact with Eaton support with no resolution, so hoisted the reticent bugbear up on Superuser, and linked it to an update on the original ticket.
Since PnP sees the device and reports it to the system with ID info such as the serial number, there’s little likelihood of anything obviously wrong with the UPS itself, so if not the driver, what?
This will want a resolution before committing to the purchase of batteries for either unit, should imagine the only one who would know is the author of the device driver (2009), else it’s installing the VS driver utils followed by decompilation and testing. π
Oh, and you know you have a relic attached to your keyboard when the New Journey notice arrives. πGood news, minus the excess euphoria, then. Will the ticket be updated?
Ah yes, sorry, looks like thePCIe 3 x1is the best shot, will have to check the card though.Expansion slots 1 M.2 2230; 2 PCIe 3 x1; 1 PCIe 3 x16 (wired as x4); 2 M.2 2280; 1 PCIe 4 x16 (1 M.2 2230 slot for WLAN and 2 M.2 2280 slots for storage
The unit has no wifi, which means less circuitry, and less to worry about as everything here comes through the ethernet.
And, believe it or not, the docs do include the optical drive after all:Optical drive HP 9.5 mm Slim DVD-Writer; HP 9.5 mm Slim DVD-ROM (##opticaldriveavailnote##)
The Oblivion DVDs will not be forsaken!
Absolutely hit upon the right word, simply substitute “tinny” above by “institutional”, and therein lies the explanation of the deep yet elusive Freudian link – all HP clientele hold an innate desire to be institutionalised, as opposed to those who aspire for the open world of high end gaming PCs, unconstrained in entirety from the branded shackles of Deus ex Machina.
An insight abrogating the necessity of planned appointments with the regular therapist in white, allowing one so enlightened the inclination to saunter merrily down new avenues of institutional heights. πThey’re probably validum, wonderful looking plants, over here we call that kind of thing bush tucker. Growing down the gully here is stinging nettle, from which the dried leaves are added to tea for health boost. Have some of it growing in pots, too.
Old age isn’t all that bad is it? Things go grey, black and hairless and perhaps somewhat less delicious, that’s all. The flowerhead had weathered too much, so just after taking the snap the goat got in and snaffled up everything.

Fair enough, there’s definitely a sense they have a good track record on tickets so far, something of this nature should not pose too much of an obstacle for their illustrious techos. π
The most off-putting stage of the W11 installation through Update Assistant was during the 80% β 99% stage, when W10 had expired and greyed out the pause button on W10 “important” updates, insisting these downloads be given top priority even while W11 is installing. What’s even worse, Googling something like “pause W10 updates during W11 installation” always returned hits on how to prevent W11 installing on W10 instead.
Although the HP is nice and compact, the physical components have a touch, look and feel as somewhat “tinny”, – if that could ever be construed as a justifiable description of an office PC as we know them these days, and that’s from someone who is used to well moulded stylish and attractive looking gaming towers. π
As the sound from the chip is … a little tinny, it would be lovely to transfer the SBZ cards over, think they use the same type of NVMe slots. A smaller sized card is is the paranoid’s preference for better air circulation.
Oh yes, the alternate sound source selected by W11 was actuallyvs248, which is the id of the connected monitor. Last time the monitor was checked no sound device was present. Can’t recall exactly whereNVIDIAwas spotted, there is however, a rather interesting “necro” explanation for it over at NVIDIA. π
One annoyance, if you can call it, was W11 naming the user folder as “lmste” instead of the whole userid name as a result of the account transferral operation. Could have left it of course, but knowing me, it won’t sit well on this desktop for long. So had to go through the rather involved method of creating another user and copying everything over. There happened to be file move errors, which meant that any customizations in the source user were lost. Strike while the gripe is right and chasten the quivering interface, a time consuming chore which should/would/could be automated by now. πNo mouse either?
Someone from Reddit suggested EasyUEFI as a solution, they do offer a free trial, wonder if things break as soon as it expires. π
Lawk a mussy, issues with the new HP already. First, the description had an external optical/DVD burner drive which was not included. They are sending one through, but it’s a wait, and they have accordingly updated the product listing to no optical drive.
Switching on, the audio was configured to a non-existent nvidia thingo, moving it back to realtek was fine, interestingly the product ad also had:Windows 11 Pro (preinstalled with Windows 10 Pro Downgrade)
Actually, W10 was on instead, or if they meant it was, why not just say so. The machine met the requirements for W11 so the natural choice was the Update Assistant for the installation process. All went well, albeit a bit slow at 80% – 99%, so left it to go out for a spot of garden work. On return, a couple of hours later, the machine was on, no video, so hard reset, and the machine booted up to … W10 again.
Checked the event logs, quite a few reg corruption related errors, nothing about the failed update. Tried the Update Assistant again, good news the iso downloaded by the UA was not deleted, bad news, still had to wait a long time for the final 80% – 99% to complete. This time ok’d the dialog to reboot for W11, and yay, it worked.
Right now it’s powered off, though with an unresolved issue involving WU and the Realtek audio driver, probably related to what’s described here, so looking ahead there’s the promise of a bright future with liberal lashings of considerable pain. πHeh, this next merry go round with the Ob machine was in a way, partially attributed to the cat.
Booted up the machine today, knowing everything was fine upon the startup up bell coming through loud and clear from outside the dwelling. Great! Some time later, in pulling up a video, instead of the usual blast of sound from the SBZ, there was rather muted output coming from only one speaker.
Tried the usual troubleshooting, and rebooted, no change. Oh dear, do remember a solution/workaround regarding channels in the closed Creative Labs forums, unfortunately the search facility on the archived page requires login which in turn produces a 302.
So, got around to checking the physical connections, in particular the phone jack to RCA on the amp, and … huh, the sound was there even when either of the left right channels was disconnected.
Then it all came back, there is a second pair of speakers located outside that were activated earlier today in order to listen to a radio show, the sound that seemed to come from the one speaker near the door was actually booming in from outside.. And, because the cat was inside sleeping, turned off the house speakers, something that is done only on rare occasions. So, no problem at all, which, in summation, is testament to the up hills and down dales one undergoes throughout the aging process, and will not likely improve over time! πA hazmat truck parked outside any fine dining establishment may impact on the comfort of patrons and ease of staff!
That thing is more than ten tonnes – the Frontier is hundreds of times more powerful, only around 30 times heavier. No bids from here either. π
Have you been to the Kennedy Space Centre Visitor Complex? Presumably the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility is situated a respectable distance from the restaurants.
Interesting layout though:

Had a quick but fruitless trawl for “playable” TCG WP plugins, the most attractive looking one is the octgndev at wordpress.com, but of course we’re at least 12 years late, and things have changed considerably since then. Is there any chance at all with the PokΓ©mon TCG SDK?
As for databases, wpdatatables is sure to do the job, though rather big, Energy Search will want a brush up, MTG Tooltips possesses certain charms. πWell, for sci-fi reality, we want REAL flying saucers please! π The Syfy Wire site is updated frequently with what you might say middle of the road content spiced up a little for a target audience of upper middle nerds. π
Yep, for some movies and remakes like that Halloween where you know exactly where things are going to be in 30 minutes, including the effects of the extra exertion on your part, if a quick snooze doesn’t appeal, time to switch channels!
Hmmm (bloopers notwithstanding), Demon of Paradise is not listed in the Cultural Impacts …, should a reference be inserted in there?
Oh yes, along with Hitchhikers Guide, Red Dwarf is the the best sci-fi laugh-in out there, definitely go to see the repeats. Canned laughter provides extra vibrancy in outer space, too. π
Much of the mystery of Red Riding Hood Trilogy was lost after viewing Part Three first, being under the mistaken allusion the stories in the trilogy could be seen in any order. The obvious analogy is reading a book backwards chapter by chapter, the extra cognitive power required to sort out events from the beginning have the effect of cementing the plot into memory rather well. π
Blue Lights is a procedural modelled to a large degree on The Bill, with a greater focus on crime gangs. Sharp and perky interchanges keep you glued on what’s coming around the corner for these young, brave heroes.
Enjoyed Drive, consisting of a very earthly palette of themes underpinning a space electro pop driven score, the cinematography imbued with a style reminiscent of period and rather stylish sci-fi shoots.

The TSA red carpet scene is on TikTok only it seems, and the full screen function opens a new tab to the source video, detracting a little from the full red carpet experience of viewing the vid!

Alternately, to view it here, turn up the resolution (ctrl mousewheelup) to suit, here it is around 200% in maximised window. Have you ever experienced browser burko withmsftconnecttest.com? Happened on w11 Chrome with new browser tabs opening in succession to that address. If it was NCSI, how do the browser pages help I wonder?
Ahk’s cert has expired, it might now be in the repair workshop as the site now returns a SQL ERROR, so the link to this interesting class for unit testing may fail. “Harness” is also included in testing jargon these days.
Edit: AHK back!
What with the release of the Fallout TV series and updates to the FO4, things have go a little wonky at Nexus, undergoing a substantial demand on their servers. Understandable, as some of those mods are gigabyte sized. There’s … still a few imps dancing round and round, as firing up the old W10 Ob machine got a blank screen, rinse and repeat, nothing, couldn’t hear any obvious signs of disk activity either. No sign of activity on the TV (primary monitor connected through HDMI.) The repair shop might have used a DVI connection for the monitor, however the dual monitor info was lost, from recent experience W11 handles monitor behaviour (from history?) a little differently.
Then remembered the connection of the previous replacement rig back here was with HDMI through to the old Samsung S24B350 monitor, because that (secondary) monitor has no DVI out, a minor inconvenience. So connected the GTX 650 out to the monitor through HDMI, nothing on the secondary (but primarily used monitor). Switched on the TV, and there it was, a Windows desktop! Reconnected the VGA cable to the secondary monitor, reconnected HDMI to the TV as before, switched display in Settings, pressed something on the monitor itself to re-affirm VGA, pulled the HDMI, and wow, it all came back as before! πAnd – er – they may have go the repair info round the wrong way as the Ob machine had the SW issue and the Skyrim rig was a reseat. Possible, although unlikely, as the Skyrim rig is still not fixed, and the Ob PC still has the wake from Hibernate freeze. The repair guy also made a note that as these machines are beyond obsolescence, backup the data! Relics of an era indeed!
Yeah, reminiscent of an old Win 3.X bug where showing a popup or system menu did the same thing.
Quite a few commercial sites do that now, rather than set the spam in the settings, find and use the unsubscribe link in the spam. Wonder if that’s the same in Woocommerce and the rest?
Dostips have been down a couple of weeks at least, the comments at the end of this page are somewhat off-piste as they actually refer to other downed sites. πThe Ob desktop is back from the repairer. He’s pretty good, and looks like he might have identified the issue with the drives configuration referenced by software using certain core libraries, like Oblivion.
Did ask him if I could have solved it with a recovery disk (DVD probably, the old BIOS/UEFI doesn’t handle USB sticks all that well), he said probably, at the expense of wiping the disks, so yeah.
The Skyrim desktop was a mobo check and reseat, funny that as I thought it was fine. (And so it was. if looking at a blank screen was the desired outcome. π )Yerk, firmware upgrades are such that there is limited support for rollback, good luck if S76 can organize a quick fix. Can you get into Windows without issue?
You mean the Fix Threaded Replies Jump bug fix? Could work, feel free to try if you like. In the meantime, updated the above link to include this bbPress thread which has it as a core bug/feature. π
Edit: Contemplate’s fix at that thread doesn’t work anymore. π
Will retry tomorrow. πAh, sounds more like belladonna, many forms of colocasia (including antiquorum), alocasia and even unrelated Xanthosoma are staple in many parts of the world, all requiring boiling/steaming to remove the effects of the crystallized calcium oxalate. The sunflower is still alive, very bowed over now, the petals are long gone since, and the leaves are beginning to pale. Youth fleeting, age defeating. Would you recommend harvesting the flowerhead for the pot?Sounds like it’s a known issue. A factory reset helped one, but not another.
Someone suggested:Go into settings > Device care > Performance profile and set the profile to light.
Is that setting on yours, it’s not found here, unfortunately, just auto-optimization under Performance.
On the tablet here there is a Battery section in Settings where there is:Battery Protect (Limit Charge to 85%)
They explain it here, is there a reason why the limit can’t be 99% instead for the same effect?
Also in Batteries setting there is a Power saving switch, doesn’t promise to be much of an impact though. πDo appreciate the work gone into the Anandtech and 3dMark sites, the functionality is no doubt a bit more clunky if you don’t sign up.
This is planned to be a winter PC, thus a slightly unhinged reliance on cool ambient temperatures at least as far as pre global warming conditions go. π
Have to agree as far as performance goes, here are topcpu’s UHD 770 comparison assessments, hd 7700, gtx 650, and rx 550. Interestingly, the 4gb rx 550 does not quite match the similarly priced 1gb hd 7770. One naturally assumes that as “things improve with time”, the rx would exceed the hd doubly or so, silly, silly. π
Good thing is the igc uses much less power than any gpu really, including the low powered 50W rx, a card purchased for low footprint and high performance, we wish.
Yeah, 4 16gb slots and only one stick – sounds like an idea to beef it up sometime. π -
