Had this come in: https://www.media.mit.edu/projects/labububot/overview/
Still have no intention of getting one but could be a lot of fun!
Couple of showers over here which is nice. π
Might be quite nice if the price is right, and if it can negotiate and traverse rough terrain. Can it operate off-grid for example? Mass production then may not be entirely in the spirit of the enterprise, in which case raising an issue for it may not elicit a response.

Here’s another one from Sceptic:

Random quotes:
What began as a promise of global connection and unlimited access to knowledge has become a hornetβs nest of hatred, distortion, and lies.
…
Facebook made “friends” out of strangers; Google made urban labyrinths now navigable and dynamic. E-commerce opened up entire new vistas of opportunity. Micro-loans, made possible by digital technology, would lift developing nations of endemic poverty. The vast, inscrutable world of the pre-digital era had magically become legible. We could discern truth from falsehood, fact from distorted fiction. The panacea was just on the horizon, burnishing the sky with hope.

The theory of new journalism built on a rejection of neutrality and objectivity would not be quietly embraced by journalists at legacy outlets, but trumpeted in the pages of news outlets across the country. It would become a cause célèbre of journalism in itself.

The atomization of living life with heads bowed, eyes locked on the device of our hands, is total. The common culture defined by books and magazines is gone. And with it, the shared vocabulary of generally agreed upon fact – the moon landing was a triumph, safely administered vaccines keep populations healthy, biological reality exists, and a complex dynamic of politics and markets, not a shady cabal of uber-rich Jews, determines the course of nations – has been dispatched
Only two weeks after his shot, Shem has become almost immobile in a rather speedy downgrade to Stage 4 End-Stage Osteoarthritis. Difficulty with his eat/drink/motions now as well. Oh well, best to keep him comfortable in his basket for a while, looks like time for the needle in any case. π
On a rather cheerier note, a few showers coming in for tomorrow which is nice. Weather behaving your way?
The Labubu bot may need treads before it can adequately roll on various terrain. Not hard to do: gluing rubber mats to it may be the ticket. Will definitely need to look at the project in more detail.
The readme is kind of light on details, though. Definitely needs more fleshing out.

π How old is he now?
We’re starting to get more regular rain, which is nice. We’ve already lost a lot of trees with others in desperate need of water. The neighborhood is definitely going to need to do some replanting once the drought ends.
Another issue for the Labubu mob, arranging for it to be fitted with a vacuum hose for the gathering dust in our houses. And a playlist of cheerful whistles to get it across the task!
He’s gone to a better place now:
Next to some canna lilies in an area kept fallow for years now, and come over a little grassy. They will bloom for sure next year at least.
And to cap it all off, a filling along with some enamel shrapnel has removed itself in order to bring in more cheer for the coming winter.
More rain though which is nice.
Could possibly cannibalize a few robot vacuums for parts to get the Labubu heads to suck up dirt π
π Good choice on site. I like to keep my dogs’ ashes in the living room so that they’re always nearby π
We’re getting some rain as expected, finally. Not a whole lot but it is better than nothing.
Got to thinking recently, we need a knowledge vault in addition to the seed vault. What’s the use of storing all of that food supplies if we won’t have the tools to use it to rebuild? Would need to manned around the clock just in case something happens so the various locations would need, ideally, at least three teams each taking eight hour shifts (or less, depending on how many shifts are used). Would also need to have the locations spread around the globe and all contents translated in multiple languages. Getting everyone to cooperate on this endeavor is another matter entirely.

That’s a lot of storage!
However, there is a trade-off:
The flash is not standard QLC. Girard says endurance is lower, at around 0.1 drive writes per day, compared with around 0.5 DWPD for current QLC drives.
A seed has everything it wants for the future, all we have to do is give it soil. air and water. Or a GPGP. π
Probably best to stick with TLC then. Interestingly, ARK: Survival Evolved with DLC can be half a terabyte, and a modded DCS game can use a terabyte. Hey, we’re falling behind in the fight for game storage to exceed storage boundaries. π
It’s thought that crickets fell pain:
https://www.sciencetimes.com/articles/61175/20260122/do-insects-feel-pain-how-insect-nervous-systems-reveal-hidden-suffering.htm
Uncertain results with bees, wasps, ants and beetles it seems.
I’m actually thinking beyond just farming. Take ancient Rome, for instance. They had computers, even if rudimentary, and even indoor plumbing with hot and cold running water. The technology was lost for a thousand years before being rediscovered.
As for storage medium, digital isn’t a good option as not only does it break down faster than analog but it is also highly susceptible to magnets and electrical impulses. The ideal medium would be to print everything on stone tablets but those wouldn’t be exactly practical π
I’m not seeing half a TB from the storage requirements for ARK, only about 80 GB or so (they don’t list the space taken up by each pack for whatever reason but the season pass takes up 20000 MB (why they don’t use GB is beyond me….)). Anyways! Games are taking up more and more space. If I had known at the time, I would have opted for two 2 TB SSDs instead of 2 1 TB SSDs when I ordered this system. Not that I’ve run out of space yet…. π
And, similarly, crustaceans do as well. I thought I had read that plants also feel pain but couldn’t find the study. They, do however, respond to the stimuli even though some folks say it’s not a pain response due to the lack of a nervous system. I would argue otherwise, however: if they’re responding, even without a nervous system, then I would say they most certainly do feel pain, even if it’s not pain in the same sense as animal pain.
Descarte’s notion of consciousness => pain was a good try, bottom line is we cannot feel what animals fell unless we can be imbued with animal traits for experimentation. Which means becoming a candidate for a fun filled jaunt over at the The Island of Doctor Moreau or similar. Not on this bucket list. π
There is a bee that tolerates the poisoned nectar of the death camas, turns out so does the fly Earomyia melnickae, and the fly Eristalis nemorum. Amazing stuff, from the shots of the latter, looks like the flies are fairly social creatures too.
The 1% club offers a diverse bunch of questions – most of which are direct and unambiguous. If you’re not on top of the game and 30 seconds isn’t enough time for one’s own quixotic and neuronic call and fetch routines to play out, some questions can throw you, like this one. Thing is, I saw llama in there first, you know, because they are always on my mind.
1% club policy is one answer for each question, thus the ploy of informing the game host “look out, there are llamas” isn’t going to fly. π
And speaking of bees, apparently they’re good problem solvers!
Bigger brains aren’t necessarily better it seems, here’s the video btw:
On the radio the other day was Purity, filth and ‘promiscuous defecators’: why we’re weird about poo, note the classification under “Philosophy, Public Health, Recycling and Waste Management.” For a start reverse the order to read “Waste Management, Recycling, Public Health and Philosophy”, as this is a recycled universe – at least as far as we humans are concerned. Not for others in the animal kingdom as they all march to the drum of “nature takes care” of all that. π
This is the book: Spectacles of Waste, not, unfortunately, a candidate for this year’s best sellers’ list. Oh, and even though goodreads do not remove inactive accounts, using one to get in there can be a heartache. π
Awesome video!
There’s also the dung beetle!
In some districts, it’s actually illegal to leave your pets’ waste lying around even though the local critters do it all the time. And they don’t want it flushed or in the landfill. So…where do we put it?
Ugh. I have some very old accounts that are simply inaccessible due to the email domains being shut down decades ago. Never fun, that π
Bigfoot is getting attention again.
And had this come in. Cool project but I do wonder how well the plastic would hold up over time due to the micro-spaces between layers. Good way for algae to grow and things.
