In post apocalyptic lore, the bunkers are often placed near the coastlines. See the Fallout universe, Silo, and The Walking Dead as US examples (not too familiar with the genre in other locales). This is problematic due in large part to the water table and soft ground (as was featured heavily in Silo: the bunkers kept flooding). My research has shown that Colorado would be uniquely positioned as the prime location for the bunkers. Stephen King in fact had his characters in The Stand migrate there. Why Colorado? It has a very low water table (about 500 feet on average), decreasing the chance of flooding. In contrast, Wyoming has a water table twice as high. It has good, solid rock to dig in to help the structures stand the test of time. The mountains, additionally, allow for you to transmit a long distance (but not receive) on account of being over two miles high in some locations. It also has geothermal energy reserves as evidenced by its hot springs. One issue would be water filtration on account of the mineral deposits so strong purification would need to be used.
In theory, the mountains would also be of benefit to solar cells but those degrade and would be harder to replace. However, the reflection of light off of the snow would help them work more efficiently.
Started reading Rubicon yesterday and imagine my surprise when it was dedicated to a Warcraft III character 😛
Living a life in a bunker, as it were anywhere near as good as life above ground, no matter what it promises, is bunkum. 😛
Warcraft III Neophyte: Which Rubicon book is that?
What Happened to the Intellectual Dark Web? For the disenchanted and falling out, what’s left? Bags Non-Intellectual Light Web to make a yin and yang of it, no? 🙂
Ah, humans vs. The Mechan in eternal conflict, quite a few not happy about the ending as well – is there possibly a better one?
That is a massive article indeed, surely a candidate for a Walrus-Tech spinoff. 🙂
As time marches on, Google Community erases content from their forums, case in point, they did however tag it as a !Non-Issue, presumably the reason for closing the thread. 😛
The broken linked threads (no doubt tarnished by link rot) are the following:

It would have been fine if they had just ended it before the last chapter. It was already implied that the main story was over and the conflict resolved. At least until a couple pages in to the final chapter.
A lot of my thinking of Walrus was actually inspired by Vault-Tec but without Vault-Tec’s other issues…. 😛
Yeah, Google has been getting bad about preservation lately, which is a bit depressing. I still wish I could redownload my Google Reader archive from years ago as I lost it in one of the computer shuffles. 🙁
OTOH, we’re bound to get close and personal to a bunch of Walrus issues which don’t involve Vault-Tec at all. The first and most obvious, is that Walrus is not a fictional brainchild of a game-creator, although there is no reason why it should not have a readable, rollicking and ropable counterpart in myth. One for the thread! 🙂
Got a CloudFlare blech on this site, https://www.sure-green.com/suregreen-gardening/suregreen-plant-protection/suregreen-mesh-and-netting.html
Same with you? Succumbed to temptation and posted at Reddit
Certainly! Can definitely have some fun with it. Feel free to get the discussion going! Been a bit focused on other things the last few days but can definitely reply and add thoughts 🙂 Or I can get it going once things settle down some in a couple of days. Either way is fine by me 🙂
All good here. CloudFlare does sometimes block me from random sites, while others it gets caught in loops and won’t let me in even though it doesn’t block me. To be fair, it used to be much worse in their earlier days.
Good selection there! It’s also incredibly useful for all sorts of things. You can use it to make sieves, plug up fencing, and more!
Been considering reinstalling Minecraft on the new system to add variety. Been drawn to building games lately. Been bouncing around OpenTTD and Manor Lords a lot the past week or so. Right now, I’m building a passenger focused network in OpenTTD, forgoing pretty much everything else. But I haven’t played Minecraft in five years since I accidentally shorted the old system out while cleaning it so it’s probably past time 🙂
Huh, interesting, glad it was of use. 🙂
Cloudflare wouldn’t let me get on to NexusMods, because the time on this desktop was not updated for the end of daylight saving. After changing it and clearing cookies, still required a bit of doodle-foo for the thing to like me again. 😛
Back on the machine with the soundcard, forgot all about the dread 5.1 setting. 😛
Weird. Not everyone has to change the clocks so I can see that being very problematic
I’m kind of surprised that no one has fixed that with an OBSE plugin yet. There are plugins that fix most of the other quirks!
Got Minecraft reinstalled. Took me a few worlds to get the hang of it again but I now have basic shelter in a cave. Going to need to move for more permanent lodging as it’s pretty mountainous so I don’t have the flat land I need for development. 🙂
Having difficulty getting back into Minecraft. I’ll keep making new worlds until I figure it out again.
The PC time was a day out (weekday correct – calendar date wrong) which explained a BIOS settings mismatch, and the Solitaire Events not playing nice, now fixed. 🙂
The setting in SB commander didn’t stick after reboot, even after stopping the service, so now trying out “direct mode” for the soundcard, seems a little more promising.
And ew, a few repairs on some of my tiny Oblivion mods due. 🙂
Sounds like a challenging game, with quite a few mods out as well, would “Tamriel in Minecraft” be of any use?
Ah, yeah, that definitely does some odd stuff.
There was a group on Dark Creations trying to make the region of Skyrim in Minecraft back when I was adminning there but I don’t know what became of the project. They never did post publicly but development seemed fairly active. No idea if it’s the same group. Could be, the timing is about right.
I’m playing Bedrock at the moment as it works better than the Java version (I avoid Java when I can). Unfortunately, Bedrock doesn’t have good mod support. You can have resource packs and behavior packs but they’re limited compared to what you can do with the Java version of the game.
Part of my trouble with it is that it’s taking me a bit to get my creativity back. I’m also out of practice. I had a monster steal my boat when I hopped in and they immediately killed me when I stepped out to evict them. 😛
Current world started this morning is a bunch of islands so mining is hard but I think I’ll try to stick with it as long as I can. There is some good flat land so I’m going to start building up on the surface. Haven’t hit iron yet but there is a village nearby so they may have the iron I need to get basic production going. Time will tell
Codgerspace is a pretty fun read. It involves a collection of short stories to tell a larger story so there’s not a whole lot of depth to it but still a good one 🙂
Ugh, even the science category on Google News is overrun by click bait. The algorithms have gotten totally useless 🙁
Going to need to see if the main sites I get my science news from still have RSS/Atom feeds. Then I’ll need to find a web reader since it looks like Feedly has mostly moved away from them….
The name appeals, a melding of MySpace and Facebook = CodgerSpace? Rodger that!
The Science section e.g. this provides links to well-known sources e.g. cosmic jousting at Reuters. Do you get those – it appears to be region based, so we get a lot of Mirage content over here.
The Disney Fun-Fact-Fantasy-Fiction collection arrived at the shop, so snapped another presentation:

Not too many good videos of ants twerking, there’s this one of a bee:
No idea what the name means but the story is about a bunch of machines who go on strike to look for aliens. 😛 It’s a pretty fun read!
Yeah, that’s much better. It seems that some days are better than others. When I posted about it the other day, half the articles were clickbait. Today, though, they’re not. I may need to start trying to tweak things again but those preference settings are hit or miss in my experience.
Cool find! I haven’t been recently myself. Do like going to thrift stores as I never know what I’m going to find!
Bees like to dance! Remember watching a program years back that explained it and how it was all part of their society. Here’s a similar video:
Bee society is really fascinating! 🙂
Great story on the waggle dance, and its purpose and meaning. Thanks!
Apparently the Late Show doesn’t screen every night over here, so they replay some older shows to fill the void. This is an intro to one:
Can hardly imagine how this could have happened, it’s usually a matter of tensioning the holding cables to the centre of mass on the ship, but the bow never got off land! Cf. this US navy launch:
Sounds like there may have been some structural weakness, that caused part of it to sheer off during the launch. Sometimes, they’ll flood the dock instead. Much safer!
My mom just got a johnboat. Should be fun to play with along the rivers and lakes. Amazingly, she doesn’t have any dry bags so I’m probably going to pick some up at some point 🙂
The Switch 2 comes out in a few days. I’m going to wait to get mine until next year at the earliest. I want to wait for them to get the kinks worked out and for more games to come out. At the moment, a lot of the early games are just upgrades of the ones on the original Switch. Elden Ring does look compelling but I need to see some gameplay information before I decide on getting for the PC or console. It’s been on my radar since it came out so I’ve been meaning to look for a while
