Dyson spheres could be an interesting addition to the game. I’m sure there’s a mod for it but I haven’t gotten into modding the game yet. Maybe someday I’ll look into playing with mods 🙂

So Guitar Center used to be named The Organ Center. That name only lasted a few years. Not overly surprising 😛

Scored a Sentinel ship today! It’s incredible! Great stats and the technology is much cheaper to charge. Not only can you charge it via traditional materials, you can also charge it from materials you gain from killing Sentinels. The latter charge things up even more than the traditional materials. Wheeee!

Grinberg’s next project: convert the engine of a Model T Ford into a Hybrid, and while we are on the topic of transportation and spheres, there is the Dynasphere, a modification for which could be implemented at funfairs to replace or augment dodgem cars. 😛

Back in the day, organ shops were ubiquitous as everybody had to have one. These days, the merchants can barely raise the capital to scrub out the old signs and replace them with the updated inventory. Wanna Hammond organ? Here’s a deal, we’ll throw in a few extra cobwebs for free!
The Sentinels sound formidable, are they anything like those from the X-Men?

Despite “The North Wind and the Sun” still being used in phonetic sampling there were some who preferred to cry wolf. As it so happens, the wolf is in AI clothing now, because telling the difference between human and AI voice samples requires more of a better set of ears than before. Something the likes of Presbycusis have no answer for. 🙁

I remember old cartoons used to riff on that design by making it a hamster wheel or the like. 😀 Would be quite fun, though. Set it up with a gyroscope to keep you centered in the middle while the rest of with rolls around you. Attraction idea for the theme park thread?

Ah, didn’t realize that musical organs were that popular. Yeah, I see them at estate sales periodically for pretty cheap. Even the pianos tend to be more popular at the sales. Now, if someone had a pipe organ…that would be a bit more difficult to sell and move 😛

Not exactly. The Sentinels are essentially robots from an alternate universe that think it’s their job to make sure planets’ resources are untouched. They’re fine if you explore (except on planets where they’ve gone haywire) but will attack if they see you doing anything else. If you keep at it and attack them, the alert level continues to climb until they bring out the big guns: giant mechs and robot dogs. In space, they’ll start with a squadron of fighters and escalate from there to a giant capital ship. You find out the lore by reading old logs left behind at crashed ships (usually destroyed by Sentinels) or abandoned buildings.

Speaking of, do we need a comic thread or do we not have enough discussion yet to warrant one?

Yep. It used to be easy to tell an AI voice from a human. Usually they were very monotonous. Now, it’s very difficult. On the phone, there are a few tell-tale signs, though, such as pauses at certain points. Eventually, they’ll get things to where we can’t tell the difference at all!

If there ever will be a fine satirical magazine like MAD on the stands again, yep, worth a thread. Still searching for humour, there are some stalwarts in isubscribe. Websites anyone? ComicsUK definitely worth a lookover, love the funny folks:

Seriously considering American Bystander, more my cuppa, 8 mags at $20 each cost a fair bit more than MAD reruns, with possible extra cartage for international customers.
Another funny thing happened today, purchased a 4L container of fish emulsion fertilizer which fell ever in the back of the ute during transit. Only a small quantity leaked out, unfortunately enough to soak the side of a fine hessian bag and some toilet mats. Despite the rubber tonneau, there’s bound to be a fishy odour around there for a while. 🙁

Not sure what the current quality is like but Cracked used to be a fun read. But, yeah, it’s going to be hard to fill the MAD hole.

Yeah, looks a bit pricey. May be worth checking a sample out at the newsstand first. Wikipedia has a pretty good list

Yuck! You could try something like OdoBan if they sell it over there. We use it over here and it does wonders for getting smells out of things.

New No Man’s Sky update! It’s mostly just a Halloween event with nothing major but does include a few bugfixes. Very pleased to see the butterfly wings sound being tweaked. When I first heard it, I thought there was something wrong with my speakers 😛

Begging to run out of science fiction to read so I think I may shift back to horror for a bit. Been at least a year since I’ve read horror. 🙂

          #3114

So I know you’ve been pestering me to watch Wayward Pines. Since I can’t get it on the services I subscribe to, I decided to read it instead!

          Also, happy Halloween!

          #3143

Other than a few books on the wait list, I’ve pretty much run out of science fiction from the library. At least, space opera. So I’m moving to horror books now. Wish me luck!

I kind of miss the simplicity of Usenet and the BBS boards. Had access to some of them twenty years ago when Bellsouth was hosting them. Hard to beat a simple mailing list like browsing but with better organization.

After several years, my mom finally decided on a Subaru Outback. She refuses to own a station wagon for whatever reason so, even though it’s classed as one, just don’t call it a station wagon or she gets mad. 😛

That aside, she’s quickly falling in love with it 🙂

And No Man’s Sky got cross-save support last week, which is nice. 🙂

            How did Wayward Pines go?
Don’t recall the original BBS client used in the early nineties – might have been MajorBBS. Navigation, economy, and ease of use got so much better with Blue Wave in the way it processed the quk and rep files. Hyperterminal also had its uses. 🙂
Over here, they are also referred to as SLOs, (Subaru Legacy Outback), perhaps for the next gen-ers “station wagon” sounds even more back_in_the_day. Would your mum be happier with stationary wagon while at rest, and mobile wagon when in motion?

Going well so far. Still waiting on the third book to become available but I’m really enjoying it 🙂

I used Thunderbird! The interface for the news reader was pretty basic as I recall but that’s okay! Looks like there are some BBSs still around. As for the state of the content, couldn’t say. Just did a brief search and saw a few online but didn’t look to see what kind of stuff they host. 😛

Been browsing Textfiles.com again, which is always interesting.

😀 I can certainly ask! Tow hitch gets installed today so we can use it to haul the kayaks. 🙂

A few decades ago, the Forrester was the station wagon. The current model looks nothing like it!

Finally started exploring tech upgrades in NMS in the expedition. Going to need to explore them in my main game but they’re pretty handy! Just hard to find good ones since you need to check the merchant at each space station.

The English language is quickly becoming incomprehensible with how quickly slang and definitions are evolving. For instance, someone was talking about their girlfriend’s partner the other day and added no context. Without context, this could mean business partner just as much as it could mean romantic partner. This is why I prefer the term significant other in terms of relationships. It makes things very clear. With how definitions are running together, it’s very hard to parse even when context clues are in place. I’m even having some issues understanding bits and pieces of newer books because of the lack of clarity. Then we have some humorous instances of a similar nature. Someone mentioned that they don’t like wearing pants. They meant long pants but a lot of people are just shortening it to pants now. It makes for some very weird interactions 😛

Yep, no reason not to consider “partner” as just a short form of partner in crime, it has the same varied meanings. 😛
One who by some misfortune happens to come up short on the means of pants procurement ends up panting for shorts! We’re getting lazy too, here, the home shoes are always referred to as shoes, despite really being espadrilles. 😛

Fortunately, we have the Urban Dictionary to help fill in the blanks! Honestly, I don’t know what I’d do without it. I use a lot more than I used to 😛

And folks also call long sleeve shirts just, “sleeves,” which is weird. Are they being worn as a scarf, then? 😛

Mentioned this before but we should cover all of the roads, sidewalks, and bus depots with solar panels. Not only would it give pedestrians and drivers shade, it would also help generate electricity from places that are cleared anyways and don’t necessarily need the open sky. We’d need a light sensor underneath them and some low powered strip lights to help keep it from getting too dark in there

Some very good ideas from here:
                https://www.buzzfeed.com/thegeshow/top-10-coolest-uses-of-solar-panels
The first link is gone, there’s this one in Chile or another in China for example. The one in the Sahara has its critics. 😛
Good idea with the bins though, get them enough power to trot away at COB to unload at the local disposal centre. Might be a thing. The outdoor urinals now popular in Europe could flush by the power of the sun as well, in fact an aesthetic integration into an attractive water feature would brighten up the environs for the delight of all. 🙂
