Events

Event Date Place Description Sources
Baptism 1832-12-30 Grantchester, Cambridgeshire
Birth 1832
Occupation estimated after 1854 Smithfield, London Master Butcher
Note

RES quotes references to Arthur's business from Professor Willmer's "Old Grantchester." It has been confirmed, at least, that he had opened a meat wholesale business at 109 Charterhouse, Smithfield, London.
A 1899 postal directory also has him as Master Butcher still in that locality, although he was 67 at the time. There are certainly question marks over the actual timeline of transition from shop to farm, as records from the mid 1860's have him both as butcher and farmer.
It is known he was helped by son Frederick in the shop, and that he later opened a retail butcher's shop in Islington managed by the other son Arthur.

Burial 1910 Grantchester, Cambridgeshire
Property   Harlton, Cambridgeshire Lord's Bridge Farm
Note

Tenant Farmer.
The farm was for many years used advertised for children's holidays, as recalled in the notes of Martin Reeve who made several visits early in life.
In April 1893 there was a fire at some of the outbuildings containing produce at the farm caused by a 5 yr.old girl playing with matches.
The cow-house had rows of butcher's hooks for pigs and cattle marked the London Charterhouse butchery. They were freighted to Smithfield by rail, thanks to the proximity of Lord's Bridge station.
The 162 acre farm was in 1930 subdivided into four lots, one which became a riding school.
