Wonderful, a coracle is also the very thing for use in a tarn or small lake. And yes, a thermos is mandatory. π
Definitely, who wants to spend their precious gaming time on such nefarious capers as compiling or confirming bug reports?
A worrying statistic of our times is one in seven scientific papers is a crock – here’s an extract form the discussion there:
But even within isolation, a 1/7 FF rate is essentially a slow-moving local polycrisis. False results waste other scientistβs time and money if they are ever chosen for replication or extension. In doing so, they stymie careers and needlessly spend public money, they discourage researchers from continuing their careers, and students from beginning them. They delay pharmacological, surgical, and behavioral treatment of illness. They contaminate meta-analyses, and in doing so, affect the direction of entire fields, or, of more intermediate concern, hurt or kill people if they affect meta-analyses that determine treatment guidelines. They destroy the internal fabric of trust that science relies on, and force the adoption of slower and more substantive open scientific methods. Publicly, they reduce the public profile of science, and threaten the entire scientific enterprise with a loss of public trust and support. Moreover, they are self-perpetuating β fake science is faster, cheaper, and easier than real science, and if the two traditions compete to see who can produce more results (or produce the same results first), then fake science can quickly engender fake norms.
Cool! Love the design!
Got plenty of those! I have three in my cupboards and I know she’s got several insulated bottles that she finds on the river. π
Should probably pick up a basic first aid kit as well to keep in the dry bags. Got extra paddles in case the motor dies. Anything else that’s worth picking up?
Yep! A lot of software is still being updated after launch to fix bugs with the new system and we’ve been getting a flurry of updates leading up to launch day as well. There’s sure to be some breakage involved somewhere and I’ll want to know that there aren’t any serious hardware flaws that will cause a new hardware revision to be released in a few months. π
Will pick one up, just going to give it at least six months. π
Edit: most of the good stuff doesn’t hit until Fall anyways, from the looks of it
Read something similar in Nature a while back. We keep getting bogus superconductor studies and there’s still that Harvard professor saying every space anomaly is caused by aliens. It really builds distrust and you get a crying wolf situation, where people stop taking you seriously
We could use a central archive of every scientific study with the data and results, as far back as can be found (so Newton’s would be included). Not just for historical purposes but to improve on older studies and find new results in old data. Even better if it was web accessible. Maybe a potential idea for Walrus down the road?
This looks like a handy device to toss in my bag to work as a scratch pad so I don’t need to waste paper on a basic calculation that I don’t need to save. Cheap enough, too. Looks like off-brand ones are even cheaper at around 2 USD each
That’s very cheap, why Boogie Board though – it’s a thing one paddles with at pools or at the beach – over here at least. OTOH one can aspire to be either board, chairman of the board, or even chairman of the boogie board!
As a Xmas present from a relative with an idea of enhancing bodily cleansing, Lush’s Honey I Washed The Kids Shower Gel is one of the most intoxicating on the market. Suspect the citronellol, amyl cinnamal and geraniol as the main contributors, if not, the concentration of the essential oils. For me, gratefully received, and best in a bath. π
No idea why they chose that name! It’s definitely not water proof or large enough to take into the waves π
For me, I tend to use the aloe infused Irish Spring bar soap. Always has my skin feeling just right and I do like the subtle fragrance. π
Robin sold the Nexus the other day. From the sounds of his post, he simply got burned out after twenty plus years of running the site.
Quite a precarious existence making a living from website subscriptions as Robin did, amazing how it grew to what it is today.
Learnt a new word from EV parlance today, “frunk” – from trunk. Over here we call the rear storage space “boot”, funny how “froot” never took off. π
Do have a soft spot for Newton’s cradles – here are some variations:
Yeah, people generally don’t want to pay to be able to have faster downloads. Granted, he did need to pay server costs but maybe there was a better way to pay the bills? Couldn’t say. People would block ads, too, so that wouldn’t help and donations would only go so far.
Never heard of that one! I’m actually kind of surprised we don’t have boots/trunks (we can play dress up! :D) with rails on them to let you slide the beds out on longer vehicles to make loading easier. Would be quite helpful!
Yep, do love a good Newton’s cradle. They’re very relaxing! Been thinking of getting some desk toys myself just to help spice things up a bit. Of course, a cradle has been high on the list. Each time I go to the decor store, I come very close to grabbing one π
Since they cancelled Powergirl a few months back, I’ve picked up Supergirl instead. It’s a lot of fun and a totally different feel. If this makes any sense at all, it feels a lot more sparkly
Nice, looking at their list, Marvel and DC still rule the roost and stuff like Rippaverse gets shoved to the bottom of the list. Not sure about the content, it’s a rippa name though. π
Will Google’s next device will be entitled “Buns” after Enid Blyton? When it comes to apps from the general patisserie, all the hype will centre on what to sprinkle on one’s shiny new set of gorgeous Google Buns. (Vanishing dust if the competitors have their way! π )
Yeah, Marvel is still the most popular line with DC a close second. Image comics and IDW are popular publishers, though. The latter is very kid friendly while the former has Transformers and a few others that are well loved. I’ve always preferred DC myself. The stories are a lot less outlandish than those of other publishers. Some of the Star Trek comics of IDW look fun, though. May need to check them out in the shop when I go π
Perhaps a line of kitchen appliances? They’re about to open taxi service in NYC (just started testing) so why not? That would be a lot of pastries, though! Not sure I could eat them all before they go bad π
Tape making a comeback wouldn’t be a bad thing. It’s cheap and small enough to spot in for bulk storage. Its biggest issue has been retention due to the technology: it can easily become demagnetized, corrupting or losing the data. Music tapes and VHS tapes only had a lifespan of a few years before they would start breaking down, for instance.
While it appears that Lian Li has discontinued their cube cases, this one looks absolutely insane
Yes, the hospital white version also has its charms – pretty much out of stock over here though. Have you used any of their other models?
Here’s an interesting read for short story lovers, Cosmicomics, on the list for the coffe table here. His Invisible Cities leads on to more contemporary works as Ghost Cities which of course brings in to play the ghost cities of China. Places for lovers of solitude! π
In an early QI there was:
Kangaroos do not fart, because of a kind of bacteria found in their gut.
Not true, they do! π
Nope, never used a Lian Li case before but they’ve always been on my wishlist to try. Really wanted to try out one of their cube cases as I liked the aesthetic. Maybe one day I’ll get one! Not too hard to find around here, even camera shops like Adorama sell them interestingly enough.
Silverstone also has some good looking cases.
Biggest issue would be the assembly. Had to stop trying to build my own systems as I kept having trouble with them. Maybe I just need to find the case to work with? May give it another go at some point before I give up entirely
Those look like good additions to the book case. Don’t like to read short story collections on the eReader as sometimes I just want to flip to a certain one so a physical copy is preferred. Will keep an eye out next time I wander over to the bookstore π
And while we’re talking weird animal facts, camels’ urine has the viscosity of syrup!
Had this come in the other day. Could be a fun little addition π
What happens when you slap a rocket engine onto a pod? You get a Goblin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonnell_XF-85_Goblin
That would’ve been terrifying to pilot!
Been saying this for years: we should put a roof over all walkways. Not only would it help keep us dry on the sidewalks, it would also help with the heat. And, while we’re at it, let’s slap some solar panels on top that feed back in to the power grid along with fans to help circulate air, helping even more during the warm season. I’m tired of burning up whenever I need to go to the store!
The testing of the die rolling has some interesting suggestions in the video. π
Agreed, the main issues with the walkways would be upkeep and vandalism, neanderpoids breaking stuff to prove a point which isn’t lost on the rest of us. π
A Disney retirement, there’s some nice features, but is it Disney enough?
The bus shelters seem to do okay with folks respecting them, for the most part. Wouldn’t be too concerned about the panels as they’d be on the roof. Even if the panels are deemed too expensive, at least give me a roof!
Been to The Villages a few times, including a couple of months ago. It’s mostly golf courses, in addition to the overdeveloped housing. Very little retail, theming, or even leisure activities outside of golfing. They may have a movie theater somewhere but I don’t remember ever seeing one. Theming would be nice to keep it interesting instead of it being bumper to bumper homes
Disney used to own Celebration, though!
It’s a fun little neighborhood with some fun shops and events, being right near Disney. Always visit when I’m in the area and it’s a nice and relaxing area π
I don’t even know why you’d need that. Even in a mansion, it’d be too large for a room both in size and in bass output. The bass alone would drive me crazy! π
Only For the home cinema then? In that case models for larger auditoriums and theatres were to be massive in the least, and concerns for anything glass in structure will be loudly voiced. And forget about the champagne! π
How are things going in your local government – over here there is quite a calling for the Golden Turd, and last year’s winner is the council just north of here. π
The previous record holder was made for seismic research: https://pmamagazine.org/one-giant-cone-for-mankind-meet-the-diatone-d-160-the-largest-subwoofer-ever-created/
With this one being even bigger, well….. π
Local government is about the usual: bickering among themselves so little is getting done. π
