Signed up with the 64th (Yorkton) Field Battery (Artillery) regiment before enlisting with the Royal Canadian Airforce. As the RCAF provided no opportunities for a wireless operator, the Canadian navy did, hence served for 13 months at the African front, and later on convoys on the Murmansk Run, to ports on the north of Russia.
