A very occasional thread dealing with fixing anything broken on the Old Site page linked in the top ribbon. The form of the page is at it was pretty much 30 years back, uses frames and there are issues with onMouseOver bricked by the activity in the quoteboxes. The easiest thing conceptually is to pause the JS script on a mouseover image, but hey HTML isn’t a process manager. 🙁

In the meantime, regarding the old sitemeter counter replacement, it turns out the new providers do not host anything like the cgi nph-count routines on iiNet, the closest offered in cPanel is the cgi AWStats, a fine program but also at EOL. And it looks like most of the free WordPress counter plugins don’t handle specific urls.
So the alternative was numero uno on Google Search, Free counter stat, a nice service which doesn’t look like going dark any time soon. 🙂

Just to give you a heads up: Free counter stat is blocked by uBlock Origin as a tracker so it may not be able to keep an accurate count.

Thanks. Funny they are not wont to provide a list of “safe” hit counter sites, or even provide a safe hit counter themselves for sandbox purposes, which can be optionally blocked by their own software. A couple of bucks for each use could even go towards the upkeep of their own site. They also block Google Analytics by default apparently.
On the other hand, plugins like ZDN Adblock Detector are overkill, all that’s required here is a script that adds a number to the counter when an ad-blocker is detected. When it comes to other visitors like bots and crawlers, perhaps a project for Cleantalk, a counter on the page for all guests, welcome and otherwise. 🙂

Hallelujah, got something working re counter with a modified .htaccess file in OldSite and a php script that writes a hit to a file each time the page is accessed. For a better breakdown of bot visitors, see Simple visitor counter, not sure if his code handles blockers though.
No matter, all that’s required now is for some PHP to read a file and display it into a meter box in the html somewhere. Easy enough?

Not a clue! I don’t know PHP but the installation looks simple enough 🙂
